1st Annual Friendship Ride (August 13, 2005)

The first year, we kept the ride small and invited only those who knew Mike. We ventured to some of Mike's favorite spots, saving the best for last at the top of the world in Yosemite National Park.

Starbucks Coffee - Oakhurst

We all met at the local Starbucks to fill our bellies with coffee and treats. The weather was already warming up a bit and I feared that we may be hitting some hot weather all too soon. After everyone was ready, the group mounted up and headed up Hwy 49 to Mariposa.

Happy Burger - Mariposa

Located only 29 miles from Oakhurst Happy Burger was our next stop. This was one of Mike's favorite places to eat while we were out exploring new roads. Happy Burger boasts "The largest menu in the Sierras", and once you see the menu you won't disagree. After everyone was fed (again...), we hopped on the bikes and took Hwy 140 towards Yosemite National Park

Looking for Fuel - Portola

We needed to stop in Portola to top off the tanks. There isn't gas in the valley and we wanted to make sure everyone made it through without running out. I was surprised to find the highest gas prices yet as this remote station really takes advantage of the vacation travelers. After we filled up, we continued our journey up 140 to the gates of the park.

Yosemite National Park - Yosemite

The stretch from Mariposa to Yosemite winds its way along the merced river. You can usually find people fishing and rafting down the rushing water. Even though we were close to the water, this was the hottest part of our trip. When we reached the gates, there was a long wait to enter the park. We stopped for a quick break in the shade once we were through the gate. From here it was a straight shot up to Glacier Point.

Glacier Point, Yosemite

As we entered the park, the temperature dropped considerably. The 16 mile road up to Glacier Point was a welcome change as the cooler air was a real relief. When we reached the top, we were treated to one of the most spectacular views on the planet. Make sure you take the walk up to the edge of the point so you can really get an idea of how high up you are.

Michael's Place, Yosemite

Our next stop was one of Mike's favorite places to visit while up at Glacier Point because of its awesome backdrop. This special spot is located along the short windy road which leads into Glacier Point. Mike and I would never miss an opportunity to bring our bikes out along the sand and rocks to get some incredible shots. Some fear to venture out too close to the edge, but those that do are rewarded with an incredible photo opportunity. Since the ride I have decided to call this spot Michael's Place. Mike and I have brought a lot of people up to this spot and I plan to keep the tradition going.

BBQ

The long trip down the hill led us back to our home in Oakhurst. Those who were unable to make the ride were already there, waiting for us to return. It was great to see the faces of some more good friends when we reached our final destination. Michele had prepared an awesome feast and we spent the rest of the evening doing what good friends do best.

Not the end, but a new beginning

What a great day! It was a day filled with good times, great friends and some awesome sites. Although the 1st Annual Michael Haynes Memorial Friendship Ride has come to an end, we're already thinking ahead to what next year's ride will bring. I hope to see everyone again next year and just maybe we'll find some new friends to join the fun. After all, that's the point of all this, right?

Special Thanks

I would like to thank Rich Powell for creating such a beautiful memorial t-shirt for this our inaugural ride.

I also wish to thank Jodi Bearden for providing the front logo for the shirts, as well as the design of this site and the logo for Mike's step to the corkscrew.

To my wife Michele, thank you for all your help in planning this event as well as preparing the food and drinks for the BBQ. You are truly my guiding light, my strength and a testament to the fact that with the help of true friends, there is no end to what you can accomplish.
